“My team” is the buzz phrase that is used in almost every job, in one form or another, you see. When someone from the outside begins a project at a company, it might be at the formal request or maybe it is your staff that does the work of your department within a company.

From work being shared among individual staff you have to ask, “Who is your boss?”

It seems that in many cases,waiting for the right person to show up doesn’t always make the case either. Here is the scenario that I have in mind:

A Gen Y (or so it seems) graduate begins a project within your company. Since he has been a intern or volunteer within your company during his undergraduate course, you are sure that he is going to be able to lean things in as he takes on the project.

You are worried, however, because you do know that he is going to be good (or maybe even great) with his work, and you are truly worried because you have seen that he does not have a great attendance record…

If you do not hear from your new addition in a timely fashion, you begin to worry.

If your project doesn’t go well, you tell him as much as you possibly can and then end up worrying, meanwhile dreaming about his performance at the end of the day.

You and your Gen Y continue this over several weeks, frequently wondering when he will finally give up. After he passes out and there are no complaints about his time sheets or attendance, you start to wonder if the CARE-ASSados are doubling as his personal assistant and he is only showing up at 2 in the morning to rehab himself from the open gym?

You focus on his attendance again and you expect him to make it up for whatever he does as a complete mess is the way you are seeing it.. Then he dictates the sort of work you are going to ask him to do.

You ask him questions about what he likes to do or does not like to do. He is communicating with you like a normal human being. He is very responsive when you are opening things up for him and there are several topics that he is very excited to share with you.

He doesn’t seem to know where things are going wrong or what issues are ensuring that he is at that point.

If I had to take a guess, then I would say that you probably have something that was welded around right now. The buildings surrounding you, the buildings you’re in, every car, traffic lights, bridges, theme park rides, like roller coasters, trains, and more than a hundred thousand million important functions and machines that we humans interact with every single day of our lives.

Joining together two metals is so simple, that it can be easily overlooked and forgotten, maybe unappreciated, and to be fair, its completely understandable because humanity is just absolutely surrounded by it, it’s an average normal thing for us, something that isn’t thought about.

Every major component of our lives absolutely involves welding, and honestly, we would not be at the point in our lives, technologically or otherwise, without welding. It is something that we should point out is important and acknowledge that it is. So, for your convenience, here is a list of reasons of why welding is just so darn important to humanity, and all the reasons that in general the importance of welding.

 An Experts opinion

You may or may not have heard of the American Welding Society (AWS), but they are one of the leading groups on welding in the world, and obviously in America. The president of this group is David McQuaid, and he has some pretty clear-cut opinions on welding, and their importance to everyday life, and its advancements in technology, and comfort. “Welding is an essential part of everyday life. From cars to high rise office buildings, airplanes to rockets, pipelines to highways, none of it would be possible without welding.”

It would seem that David McQuaid and I share an appreciation for welding, and hopefully he’s enough to convince you on its importance, but that is doubtful, so we’ll be continuing. 

Continuing with Mr. McQuaid, according to him and his research, there is going to a significant decrease in welders. By the year 2025, welders are going to drop all the way down to only 400,000, which is pretty bad considering the fact that welding is a part of the human infrastructure, which means that the stability of civilization is going to get shaken up in a pretty bad way.

The solution, according to him, is a simple one. Simply encourage the next generation, the younger population to start taking up welding, make it a career that they will enjoy, and they’ll want to keep welding going. Which would solve the problem of having so little welders that society would be able to progress as quick a rate as it is now.

Right now, welding is not that great of a job, to be completely honest. It’s low paying, dangerous in some scenario’s, and not quite as held in high esteem as other such careers are. There is also the fact that welders only make around $65,000 annually, which is not bad money at all, but they could certainly do better in the financial department. They could try to be a doctor, lawyer, or some such if their goal is to make as much money as possible.

So, to get the younger generation to want to be a part of the welding industry, a few things are going to need a change. First, maybe give the average welder a raise, maybe just a 10% increase, which would bump it up to around $70,000. Make it easier to pick up and learn, so as to avoid unnecessary dangers that can happen. Other solutions are probably out there as well that we haven’t researched yet, but the answer will hopefully be a simple one. Those simple things that were dealing with now can be easily solved.

How Welding Helps the Economy

Now, as I said before, welding is extremely important as it is what literally connects the world together with metal. The buildings that we construct need welding, to keep it from falling, and to make it functional. Cars need welding to make it safe and dependable on the road, it won’t fall apart when you hit 70 miles an hour because of welding. Trains are made with welding, transporting goods and people all around the world in order to keep everything running.

Let’s say hypothetically, that we didn’t have welding to begin with. The few, just three things, that we just talked about would not be a thing, trains, cars, and building’s bigger than two stories, would not be a thing. Imagine not having those three simple things, how would that affect you and your life?

It’s honestly something that is difficult to think about, we’ve never had to live without it. Now, those three things would be really bad to not have but imagine all the other things that we wouldn’t have. Computers originally needed welding to build, ships, armor, appliances, and another billion things. I could list hundreds of thousands of examples from that list of billions, but it would honestly take too long, and by the first few hundred examples, you would probably have already got the message. Plus, a regular old list isn’t any fun.

So, we don’t have those things in this scenario, what things would we have, all our stuff would be gone, that list would be gone. So, that alone would not be great, but let’s look to the future.

How about a new hypothetical, let’s say that right now, we have welding and we have been advancing up to this point due to welding. Now, let’s say that welding has just completely disappeared, in this very second, we know we had welding, and that it was advancing, but for some reason or another it’s gone, maybe due to not having any welders left to weld, but we don’t have it anymore.

What would that mean? It would simply mean that humanity stops advancing. We have no more stuff to look forward to, on more advancement, that list that we said was completely gone, now it just stops growing, no more stuff. We have to settle for the computers, phones, cars, trains, buses, boats, yachts, rides, roller coasters, game systems, and again, a hundred thousand, million, billion, trillion other things.

Humanity as we would know it will not advance anymore because we don’t have welding. Imagine that we’ve been looking for proper space travel for decades, and all of a sudden that dream humanities had is now gone.

Basically, not having welding really is just the worst, what we have wouldn’t have what we have now if we didn’t have welding, and we wouldn’t be able to progress if we didn’t have the welding we do today, to make advancements for tomorrow.

Economic Strength

One last hypothetical let’s say that again, welders have suddenly disappeared right this second. Now, again in this scenario lets ignore the fact that we wouldn’t advance, we already covered how important it is. Let’s instead focus on the here and now concerning welding. What would happen to us right now if we didn’t have welding?

We would not be able to keep any sort of economy standing for more than a few decades, at best. Why is that you may be asking? Well, if there wasn’t welding and our stuff, like cars, and rides, and buildings are constantly breaking and deteriorating, how would we be able to fix the pieces of metal, that have been rusting under the cruel weather are snapped right in half. We wouldn’t be able to weld and fix any of those things ever again, it’s a one-time thing for any of those important parts of our infrastructure. Trust me when we say that duct tape and glue is only going to take us so far. All of our broken-down things would just be gone, and that above all is probably the worst, because we would not only not advance as a society, we would instead be going backwards, we would regress in order to make up for the things we lost.

All around, anyone of these scenarios and hypotheticals would be terrible, we would either be stuck with what we have now, not have had any of them in first place, and/or lose them after they break. All due to not having proper welding done in order to keep it all on track for humanity.

Recap on Welding’s Importance

We have pretty clearly established that welding is important, and we have given you some pretty good examples. First up we talked about an expert, David McQuaid, from the American Welding Society (AWS). He gave us some very interesting opinions on what’s going to be happening to welders by the year 2025, he says that there will be a shortage of 400,000 welders, which is quite insane considering the fact that welding is so darn important, and no one seems to want the job anymore. Though that can be solved by just making the job more desirable to a younger generation. Make the pay higher, make it safer for everyone involved, make it a more stable job, make sure that it’s an easier profession to get into. So, that’s something that we’ll need to keep an eye on if we don’t want the worlds infrastructure to collapse seeing as there won’t be anybody holding up such an important part of it. All of which can be easily accomplished with a bit of patience and ingenuity.

We talked through the three main scenario’s, each one’s outcome getting worse considering that welding is important in every aspect of the past, present and future. The first scenario that we covered was the one which explained what would happen if we didn’t have welding to begin with at the beginning of our progression. We wouldn’t have anything that we would today, the cars, the trains, buses, buildings, skyscrapers rockets, pipes, which is very important considering we need those for plumbing, and like I said before, a hundred million billion trillion zillion other things would be lost to use if we didn’t have welding right there from the start, so from the start it is established that welding is extremely important.

The second scenario that we ran through was the futures, what would happen if welding just suddenly disappeared from the face of the planet, how would that affect our future and economy’s progression into higher forms of living. Simply put, our progression would-be put-on hold, until we could find a welding substitute, if we even could. We would be stuck with what we have now, nothing would ever get better in the progression field. We would be stuck with the phones we have, the cars that we have, the ships, the planes, buildings, all of that we would be stuck with that alone.

Our third and final scenario is the one that is probably the worst, piled onto the others at least. If we suddenly lost welders and they were just gone, like the last scenario, how would that affect us in the present, and current time. In that case, if we just didn’t have welders, then we would start going backwards, we would regress instead of progress. If we didn’t have any welders than everything that we have, again, the cars, the buildings, the theme parks, the rockets, everything, would slowly start to break down now that there are no welders to go in and fix them when they break.  

Welding is extremely important, we can’t progress, can’t keep stable, and wouldn’t have had any of the amazing things we have today if we didn’t have the welding that is just so important. We need to make sure that there are welders to keep society standing, to make sure that we progress at a pace that won’t make us lose anything. We need to make sure that welding is always with us and that we don’t take it for granted. Your feet should rest anywhere your feet will comfortable rest. Your thighs shouldn’t be too wide.• Become fully comfortable with your desk chair. If you’re still using a manual chair, you’re probably not sitting enough. I’ve heard of someone who used a special chair with lumbar support, but he couldn’t sit right while sitting in that chair. Try a chair that includes a lumbar support mechanism, or if you’re using an dual-purpose chair, get one that can’t itself-help you in the chair.• Reduce the stress caused by poor posture while seated in the chair. Reduce your body’s sense of necessity for movement by sitting taller, walking around, standing, and peers, etc.

The Importance of Safety When Using Cranes and Rigging

To say the absolute least, being safe is one of the most important things to make a priority in any given scenario or workplace. That safety needs to be kept in mind especially when cranes or rigging is in use. We can’t have the darn things falling onto the innocent buildings below or have whatever there carrying be dropped, now can we?

Depending on those projects, the height at which those objects could fall is considerably high, hundreds of feet or more potentially. So, every crane operator needs to know the ins and outs of how to work their dangerous machine, they have to understand at least the basics, like lifting objects at angles, how to properly apply the riggings, load limits, and hundreds of other factors.

So, for your convenience, here is the basics of everything you need to know about the importance of safety when using cranes and rigging.

The Roles of Crane Operation

In layman’s terms, there are three roles in crane operation, each of which is incredibly important. There is the Operators, the riggers, and arguably the most important, there is the signal personnel. Each of these three groups have to be in constant and clear communication to effectively use their crane and rig it properly to get the job done and not let anyone get hurt by unnecessary mistakes.

It wouldn’t be very much fun if tons of steel beams fell because the operator started raising it before the rigger could hook it up. So, here is a little bit of a deeper dive in these three roles, and why there important.

The Operators

Operating a crane is a single person job, you don’t need anyone other than that one person, and it designed this way for simplicity and efficiency. There’s only one person that needs to know what they are doing and focus in order for it to work.

So, operators are the ones responsible for directly operating the crane, and subsequently lifting the equipment and resources up and down.

Operators must know every aspect and function of their crane, every button and lever inside the cabin must be known for the operator to work it effectively and safely. To prove that each and every operator can handle their crane, they need to have documented time in a classroom and hands-on training for their operating systems. At the end of the course, they’ll need certification for an accredited organization to prove they know what there doing.

It seems like quite a bit of hassle, but it is definitely worth it to learn how to be safe on a crane, and to let others be comforted with the knowledge that you know what you’re doing.

The Riggers

The riggers are just as important as the operators. The operator is moving whatever the riggers hook up to the crane, and if they don’t do it properly, then those giant, heavy objects are going to slip out of its rigging and. OSHA defines a fully professional rigger as someone who has experience and certification in performing basic tasks and beyond of rigging. They have to know how to solve problems quickly, in case anything happens during the job, they can get it fixed up nicely and without anyone getting hurt.

A few of the major things a rigger is going to need to know is how to do assembly and disassembly, hooking and unhooking, guiding loads if the need arises, initial connection of loads to different components, and a lot more. Now, something important to note out is that a rigger might be certified to specialize in one area of rigging and not be certified in other areas of it, in which case, everyone needs to be aware of what area they specialize in, in order to be effective and safe.

The Signal Personnel

Like I said, this is arguably the most important part of rigging and craning. The signal personnel are required for any operation of cranes and rigging where the operator can’t see. If there is any blind spots that the crane operator has, than the signal personnel has to be there to guide them, if the path is obstructed, or in any situation where a signaler is needed.

The thing that signals personnel need most is the understanding of hand signals and other communication and has to be in contact with the operators and riggers at all times during operation to ensure nothing goes wrong or anyone gets hurt.

Like the other two of the three, the signal personnel need to be qualified, though they don’t need a certification all the time like the others. They only need to be qualified by an employer or a third party.

Problems and Hazards That Can Occur

Every sort of construction work has hazards on the job, and they ca vary based on what type of job is occurring. Though it’s a little more straight forward concerning cranes and rigging, basically, it’s the problem of dropping or running into things when the crane is in operation.

Weather

The most obvious problem in any sort of work being done outside is the matter of weather. A lot of it can affect visibility, rope and sling strength, controlling a load, etc. A lot of this is warned about in the operator’s cabin, when to not use it during instances of bad weather.

Wind speed is the most common problem in rigging. Winds higher up the crane, around the boom, is worse, as they are stronger than the winds down below near the ground. Winds can affect load control quite a bit, making it swing and move in unpredictable ways that can affect the way the operator has to work. One of the warnings in the cabin is for the operator not to operate the crane when wind speeds are more than 20 miles per hour, and rigging shouldn’t be done in winds faster than 30 miles per hour.

Snow and ice can affect the crane by making the crane slicker, freezing up joints, giving difficulty for the riggers, etc. Rain can make the entire operation harder, lightning can strike the crane or loading when in use, causing a whole load of problems. Weather should be kept in mind at all times during operation and before to determine if it should be in use.

Inspections

Regular inspections need to be implemented for all equipment in any operation, cranes especially need to inspect to make sure it’s not falling apart, your equipment needs to be in good order and maintained for regular and long use. Daily inspections need to be done to insure everything is good to go, a qualified operator should be inspecting the cranes controls, safety devices, other equipment needed to make sure there in good working order. Just as the operator inspects the controls, the qualified rigger should be inspecting the latches, ropes, hooks, etc.

Now, inspections need to be done at very least once a year, if not monthly, weekly, or hopefully daily. If any inspections are missed, things could be out of order and that’s not a good thing, lose bolts and riggings could have things come undone.

Obstructions

Obstructions are very dangerous in this line of work and including blind spots, it can be fatal. One of the most common obstructions is power lines, so those are something to look out for, and any other obstructions need to be looked out for. Qualified signal personnel can make sure the riggers and the operators steer clear of those obstructions and keep everyone safe from running into them.

Misuse of Equipment

This one may seem to be a little obvious, but misuse of the equipment can be pretty bad. Not having the properly qualified worker in any part of the job can put a lot of people at risk and should be avoided at any cost. A rigger not being able to properly rig would mean losing whatever load is being carried, or even worse, put the crane off balance confusing the operator. An operator who’s not qualified can effectively destroy any building they come in contact with, not knowing what any of the controls are or what they do. Signaling personnel is also incredibly dangerous when they don’t know what they’re doing, they could use the wrong hand signal and confuse other workers, making them run into things dropping things, and all-around dropping things.

A specific hazard of misuse is shock loading. This is when a load is suddenly jerked up by the operator, causing the load to travel quickly upwards, faster than the line can handle, causing the line to have slack and leeway when it shouldn’t. This causes the weight of the entire load to come down on the crane and the line, which can cause the line to break or the crane itself if there not careful. An operator can avoid this though as long as they don’t lift any load up to quickly or too quickly off the load. In the absolute worst-case scenario of shock loading, the crane itself can be tipped over, destroying countless things.

Rigging methods

This is something that needs to be said as it is extremely important in the cranes and rigging process. After checking that the crane is secure, supported, and configured properly, the type of rigging that needs to be used is determined. If the type of rigging is incorrect with what is actually needed, then it can lead to all sorts of problems, that could have been easily avoided. Three of the rigging methods are:

Chocker Hitching: This is the simplest rigging method, the line being wrapped around the load and tightened to the proper amount in order to keep it secure. This is suited for large cylinder like objects, and not suited for groups of loads, it should only be done one at time in order to keep everyone safe and keep the project moving forward without problems.

Basket Hitching: This is the method in which the end of the slings is attached to the cranes hook, helping the lines avoid unnecessary tension. This is great for things that need multiple configurations to be lifted, but it is not the best when the load is too imbalanced. Something of difficult shape and not equally spread weight throughout should use a different type of rigging in order to keep everyone safe and on pace.

Vertical Hitching: This is the method in which only one side of a load is being lifted, making the other swing freely. This is not ideal for a lot of objects, as like I said, it can swing freely, meaning there is a lot of unnecessary hazards included with the load. You can envision this type of rigging to one of a wrecking balls, its rigged to the top of the ball only, making it easy to swing around and destroy things.

The operator also needs to know what type of rigging configuration is being used and at what angle the load is being rigged in. They need to know in order to properly lift it without hitting into anything and making sure everyone is safe by understanding at what angles they need to move the load. There are different angles that can be used for different types of loads and they can be implemented depending on the object. A 90 degree is a vertical lift, which is the vertical hitching, there is the 60-degree angle, and there is the 45-degree angle, each used for a different load type. The importance of the load type, rigging, and angle are all important and need to be effectively communicated in order to keep people safe, the workers and pedestrians.

Something to keep in mind, is that these angles and rigging types are examples and are not the only way things can be done, but they should be used to determine similar methods of riggings and using cranes, the safety is paramount in concerns to these effects and should be kept in mind and thought out completely.
